The whole of Larch House across its meadow: the larch-clad gable and long roof with roof lights, the lower wing beside it, a ring of river stones in the grass and oaks behind.

Places to Stay Deep in the Countryside

There's nothing quite like waking up with fields, hills or forest on every side and not another house in sight. From farmhouses and steadings to cottages at the end of a track, these are our favourite places to stay deep in the Scottish countryside.

Sometimes the whole point of getting away is going somewhere with nobody else around, and Scotland does that better than almost anywhere. Whether it's a farmhouse with the fields running right up to the door, a converted steading with nothing but hills for company, or a cottage so far down the track you'll wonder if you've missed it, these are the places where the nearest neighbour is a long way off and the nights are as dark and quiet as they come.

We've gathered our favourites, from cosy hideaways for two to big country houses for the whole family. Most come with a good chance of not seeing anyone else all week.
