Fairygreen Cottage

Fairygreen Cottage was built in 1872 for the Dunsinnan Estate's stockman, and the stone walls are still doing their job a century and a half on. Inside has been remodelled much more recently. There are two king bedrooms, one ensuite, the other next to the second bathroom and happy to become a twin if that suits the party better. The living space is open plan, kitchen and dining running into a sitting room with a log-burning stove and enough seats for everyone at once.

It sleeps four, so it works for a family or two couples, and children of every age are welcome, with a travel cot and highchair provided free if you need them. The garden wraps the whole cottage and closes off fully, useful with small escapees. Out there sits a Big Green Egg, for barbecues that outclass most kitchens.

The setting is farmland at the foot of the Sidlaws, with Dunsinane Hill on the estate itself, the one Shakespeare promised Birnam Wood would come to. The fifth generation of the Sinclair family run the place, and the estate's woodlands soak up around 2,000 tonnes of carbon a year, roughly twice what the business produces. No dogs here, on account of ground-nesting birds and the livestock.
