West Millfield
Introduction
West Millfield sleeps five across a master bedroom with a king bed, a twin room with two singles, and a small double for one, with a family bathroom shared between the lot. It's a granite cottage that once housed Glen Tanar's forestry horse handler, and the renovation kept the low ceilings, wood-panelled walls and stained glass windows rather than stripping them out, so there's a bit more texture here than in some of the newer builds on the estate.
The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher and washer/dryer, and the sitting room has a wood burning stove with logs supplied, useful given the ceilings hold the heat in well. Outside there's a garden with a patio and furniture, off-road parking, secure bike storage with e-bike charging, an EV point and a central bike wash for the estate's trails. It's a short walk from the Glen Tanar Visitor Centre and East Millfield, so you're not far from company if you want it, or from a coffee if the weather turns.

Outside there's a garden with patio furniture and a BBQ, off-road parking, secure bike storage with e-bike charging points, an EV charging point and a central bike wash. Dogs are welcome throughout.
Location
West Millfield sits within the Glen Tanar Estate on the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, a few miles from Aboyne in Royal Deeside. The estate covers 25,000 acres, including its own National Nature Reserve and a stretch of Caledonian pine forest down towards the River Dee. Ballater and Balmoral are both within easy reach further along Deeside, and Aberdeen is about an hour by road.
Good to know
The cottage has low ceilings in keeping with its original build, worth bearing in mind if you've got anyone particularly tall in the group. WiFi runs through the whole cottage including the bedrooms and bathroom, handy if you're working remotely for part of the stay. As with the other cottages, check-in and check-out times are set by the estate office, so confirm these when booking. It's a short walk to the Glen Tanar Visitor Centre, useful if you want a coffee or need directions before setting off on the trails.

The Glen Tanar Visitor Centre is a short walk away, a good spot for maps and local advice before heading out. Aboyne has day-to-day shops, a Co-op, bakery, pubs and a golf course, a few miles from the cottage. Ballater offers independent shops and places to eat, plus the old royal station. Walking and cycling trails run straight from the estate through Caledonian pinewood and along the Water of Tanar, and Mount Keen gives hillwalkers a Munro within reach. The Deeside Way passes close by too, for a longer walk or cycle.
