West Millfield is a granite cottage on the Glen Tanar Estate near Aboyne, in Royal Deeside, and it was once home to the estate’s forestry horse handler.

After a series of sympathetic renovations it keeps its low ceilings, wood-panelled walls and stained glass windows, with British-made fabrics. It overlooks forests and fields. Inside, a wood-burning stove has unlimited logs, and there is a shelf of books.

It sleeps five, in a king-size room, a twin and a small double for one, with a family bathroom and a utility room where boots can dry. Outside there’s a garden with a barbecue, secure bike storage with e-bike charging and a bike wash, and the Glen Tanar Visitor Centre is a short walk away. Dogs are welcome.

A very special place, looked after especially well.

West Millfield is on the Glen Tanar Estate near Aboyne, in Royal Deeside, in the Cairngorms National Park, and a short walk from the Glen Tanar Visitor Centre.

The estate covers 25,000 acres of ancient pine forest, hills and lochs, with a National Nature Reserve at its heart. The Estate Office is at Brooks House, Glen Tanar, AB34 5EU, which is also the sat nav postcode. For a meal in Aboyne, the estate suggests The Boat Inn.
