Butler's Lodge
Introduction
Butler's Lodge sits inside the walls of Glen Tanar Estate, 25,000 acres running along the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park. Three bedrooms sleep six: a master with a king bed, a second king room, and a twin for the kids or a third couple. There's a family bathroom and a separate shower room, so nobody's queuing on a Sunday morning. The sitting room has a wood burner for the colder months, and the kitchen runs to a dishwasher, washer/dryer and drinks cooler, everything you'd need for a proper family week rather than a weekend.
Outside, the garden is enclosed, handy if you've brought a dog or two (up to two are welcome here), with a patio and BBQ set up for summer. There's off-road parking, a secure bike shed with e-bike charging points, and an EV charger available as a paid extra. The cottage was once home to Glen Tanar's butler, and a few original features remain, but it's been comfortably updated for self-catering stays. Glen Tanar has been run by the Bruce family since 1986, and Butler's Lodge is one of seven cottages let across the estate today.

Location
Glen Tanar is a working estate on the south side of the River Dee, roughly 2 to 4 miles from Aboyne depending on the route in, since the estate drive itself runs a fair distance before you reach the cottage. Ballater and Balmoral sit around 10 to 12 miles further along Royal Deeside, and Aberdeen is about an hour by road. The estate holds its own National Nature Reserve, one of Scotland's largest remaining areas of Caledonian pine forest, with the walled garden and Victorian Ballroom a short walk from the door.
Good to know
Check-in is from 4pm, check-out a strict 10am to give housekeeping time to turn the cottage round. Heating runs on the estate's biomass system, so the controls are best left alone. Glen Tanar is on a private water supply, so guests are asked to go easy on usage, showers over baths where possible. The EV charger needs booking in advance, priced from £20 for three nights up to £40 for a week. It's a smoke-free property, garden included, and dogs shouldn't be left unsupervised inside.
What's nearby
Aboyne has day-to-day essentials, a Co-op, bakery, pubs and a golf course, a few miles from the cottage. Ballater offers independent shops, delis and good places to eat, plus the old royal train station. Balmoral Castle is within easy reach for a visit in season. The Glen Tanar Nature Reserve has waymarked trails through Caledonian pinewood, with red squirrels and salmon in the Water of Tanar, and the Deeside Way runs nearby for walking or cycling. Bike Station Ballater offers hire around 20 minutes away, and Lochnagar and Mount Keen give hill walkers two Munros to aim for.
