Royal Deeside
Garden Cottage
Introduction
Garden Cottage sleeps four across a master bedroom with a king bed and en suite shower room, plus a twin room with two beds sharing a separate shower room and toilet down the hall. It's the one Glen Tanar cottage that doesn't take dogs, so it suits guests after a quieter stay or anyone with allergies to think about. The kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher and washer/dryer, and the sitting room has a wood burning stove with logs supplied, plus a Freeview TV and WiFi that runs through the whole cottage.
The cottage sits inside Glen Tanar's own walled garden and was once home to the estate's head gardener, so there's fruit trees and flowering shrubs more or less on the doorstep. Outside there's a fishing rod store alongside the usual off-road parking, secure bike storage with e-bike charging and an EV point, and garden furniture out in summer for eating al fresco. It's a fair bit smaller in scale than some of the other cottages on the estate, which suits couples or a small family after somewhere calm rather than a big group.

Location
Garden Cottage sits within Glen Tanar's walled garden, part of the wider 25,000-acre estate on the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, a few miles from Aboyne in Royal Deeside. The estate holds its own National Nature Reserve and a stretch of Caledonian pine forest down towards the River Dee. Ballater and Balmoral are both within easy reach further along Deeside, and Aberdeen is about an hour by road.
Good to know
Garden Cottage is pet-free, the only cottage on the estate not taking dogs, so it's a good option if allergies or a quieter stay matter to your group. WiFi covers the whole cottage, bedrooms included. The cottage sits within the estate's walled garden itself, so guests are asked to be mindful of the planting and the other properties close by. As with the other cottages, check-in and check-out times are set by the estate office, so confirm these when booking.
What's nearby
The walled garden itself is right outside the door, worth a wander even if you're not staying long. Aboyne has day-to-day shops, a Co-op, bakery, pubs and a golf course, a few miles from the cottage. Ballater offers independent shops and places to eat, plus the old royal station. Walking and cycling trails run straight from the estate through Caledonian pinewood and along the Water of Tanar, and Mount Keen gives hillwalkers a Munro within reach. The Deeside Way passes close by too.
