Joiners Cottage
Introduction
Joiner's Cottage sleeps four across a double room with a king bed and a twin room with two singles, so it works equally well for a couple bringing another pair or a small family. There's a shower over the bath rather than separate facilities, and the kitchen comes fully equipped with a dishwasher, washer/dryer, electric cooker and microwave, everything you'd need for a proper self-catering stay rather than just a few nights. The living room has a wood burning stove with logs supplied, plus Wi-Fi and a Freeview TV for evenings in.
Outside there's a garden with furniture and a BBQ set up for summer, off-road parking and a central bike wash, useful if you've been out on the estate's trails. Dogs are welcome throughout. The cottage was once home to Glen Tanar's own joiner, and several of his original features were kept when it was restored, so there's a bit of the building's working past still visible alongside the updated interior.

Location
Joiner's Cottage sits within the Glen Tanar Estate on the eastern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, a few miles from Aboyne in Royal Deeside. The estate runs to 25,000 acres, with its own National Nature Reserve and a good stretch of Caledonian pine forest running down towards the River Dee. Ballater and Balmoral are both within easy reach further along Deeside, and Aberdeen is about an hour's drive.
Good to know
Dogs are welcome throughout the cottage and garden, though it's worth checking numbers and any charges with the estate office before booking. The cottage was once home to Glen Tanar's own joiner, and several original features were kept during the restoration, so don't be surprised by the odd quirk in the layout. As with the other Glen Tanar cottages, check-in and check-out times are set by the estate office rather than fixed here, so confirm these when booking. Being on a working estate, guests are asked to be mindful around farm and forestry traffic on the tracks in.
What's nearby
Aboyne has the day-to-day shops, a Co-op, bakery, pubs and a golf course, a short drive from the cottage. Ballater offers independent shops and places to eat, along with the old royal station. Balmoral Castle is open to visitors in season. Walking and cycling trails start straight from the estate, running through the Caledonian pinewood and along the Water of Tanar, with Mount Keen giving hillwalkers a Munro within striking distance. The Deeside Way passes nearby too, useful for a longer walk or cycle without moving the car.
