Joiner's Cottage is a restored stone cottage for four on the Glen Tanar Estate, near Aboyne on Royal Deeside.

It was once home to the estate's own joiner, and several of his original features were kept when it was restored. The walls inside are bare stone, and the green front door sits under steep stone gables. The living room has a wood-burning stove with as many logs as you need, plus books and a Freeview TV for the evenings.

It sleeps four, in a king-size double and a twin, and the bathroom has a shower over the bath. From the front door you're straight onto miles of walking and cycling trails, or a stroll by the river, and there's a garden with furniture and a barbecue in summer. Dogs are welcome, and there's somewhere to keep bikes and rods, with a bike wash for muddy tyres.

The kitchen has an electric cooker, a microwave, a dishwasher, a fridge freezer, a breakfast bar and an iron and ironing board, and there is a utility room with a washing machine and a tumble dryer.

The Lookout, evenings 8 to 10pm; book with the office.

The estate covers 25,000 acres, with the third-largest native Caledonian pinewood in Scotland, and the Water of Tanar runs through the glen. Aberdeen Airport is about an hour away.
