Woodend was once Glen Tanar 's hydropower sub-station, and it's been turned into a bright, open cottage for four.
White beams cross the ceiling, skylights fill the living room with light, and the wood-burning stove sends its flue right up the double-height room. French doors open onto a secluded patio and an enclosed garden. It sleeps four, in a king-size room with its own shower room and a twin. The forest, the trout loch and the Victorian Ballroom are all close by, and dogs are welcome.

The estate covers 25,000 acres, including its own National Nature Reserve and a stretch of Caledonian pine forest down towards the River Dee. Ballater and Balmoral are both within easy reach further along Deeside, and Aberdeen is about an hour by road.
Getting hereSouth of the Dee between Aboyne and Ballater: from Dinnet cross the river, take the B976 for three miles and turn in at the Bridge and Tower o' Ess.
