Ullapool

Fjell

Add to List

Overview

Fjell sits on the hillside above Ullapool, a steep single-track climb up from the village, then a modern black-clad building with a dark roof, looking south and east down Loch Broom. The name is Norwegian. It means a mountain, or high open upland. Its sister apartment next door is Fjord, the sea inlet, and the two were named for what each one watches.

This is a one-bedroom place for one or two people. Open-plan, single-level, with a covered deck that runs off both the living room and the bedroom. Big glazed sliding doors. It faces south and east, so the morning light comes in along the loch.

It's run by Sam Planterose and his family, the people behind Ecotone Cabins a few miles south at Leckmelm Wood, so they know this corner of the Highlands properly. Sam's also a volunteer medic with Dundonnell Mountain Rescue. That tells you something about how well he knows these hills, and it's reassuring if you're heading into them yourself.

You can walk down into Ullapool in about 20 minutes.

Location

Ullapool is a working harbour village on the edge of Loch Broom, on the road north to the NC500 and the jumping-off point for the CalMac ferry to Stornoway. Corylus sits just above it at Braes, IV26 2SZ, far enough up to feel set apart but close enough to walk down for the shops, a coffee or dinner. Paths start from the door onto the hill, with views over the loch towards the Summer Isles. Inverness is about an hour and a quarter by car.

Good to know

Check-in's from 4pm, out by 10am, with a three-night minimum and arrivals usually on a Monday or Friday. No pets, and no smoking inside or on the decked areas. No wood burner either, on account of the deep insulation and zoned underfloor heating, which keep things warm without one. The south-facing glazing does mean it can heat up in strong sun, so the blinds earn their keep. Worth knowing: Fjell's utility room is shared with staff for changeovers, mostly Mondays and Fridays. A 30% deposit secures the booking.

What's nearby

Plenty, and most of it slow. The Dipping Lugger does the serious cooking in the village and turns up in the Michelin Guide, so book ahead. Delilah's and The Seafood Shack are the easier, friendlier options. Walk straight onto the Ullapool hill paths or up Meall Mòr from the door. Rhue and Ardmair beaches are ten minutes out. Stac Pollaidh's about half an hour for a quick iconic hill. Push on into Assynt for Achmelvich, Suilven and the white-sand stuff. It rewards taking your time.
