Knockan Crag Trail

Welcome

Knockan Crag National Nature Reserve is where the rocks of this part of Scotland explain themselves.

Millions of years of history are told in the rocks around you, and you need no geology to enjoy them. A guided trail leads from the open-air visitor centre, explaining the Moine Thrust through displays, sculptures and interpretation boards. The landscape here was fiercely debated in the 19th century, when old rock was found sitting on top of younger rock. It made no sense until two geologists explained it through huge shifts of tectonic plates. The trail takes less than an hour, and shows how Scotland was made many millions of years ago.
