A few steps from the harbour in Ullapool, a small white building with a porch and bay windows holds an independent bookshop.

From the outside it looks modest; inside, the shelves reach up to the ceiling, and the range is a surprise for so small a shop.

The Ullapool Bookshop leans towards Scotland: its writers, its landscape, its wildlife, its history and the lore of the north-west, with books by local authors and plenty for anyone who has just arrived and wants to know more about where they are. There is good general fiction too, a well-chosen children's section, and one shelf memorably labelled Sea, War, History. Maps, postcards, cards, stationery and locally made bookmarks fill the gaps.

The welcome is friendly and there is no pressure to buy. It opens every day.
