The Corner House

Add to List

Overview

Set at the edge of the old Glen Dye farmyard, The Corner House blends traditional stonework with contemporary function, all without losing touch with its setting. It was once a byre, and you can still sense the scale and solidity of the building. Now redesigned by NORD, it’s become something else entirely—sharply detailed, warm, and clearly well used. Inside, the layout is simple and practical: three bedrooms (two double, one twin), two bathrooms, and a central open-plan space that handles cooking, eating, and gathering without overcomplicating anything.

What stands out most is the way the house holds its place on the estate. It’s part of the Steading group, a short walk from the wood-fired sauna and outdoor shower, and even closer to the BYOB pub Glen Dye has made its signature. Out the back, you get a small private yard with a hot tub and Big Green Egg barbecue—well sheltered and good for long evenings, even in cold weather.

The house is kitted out with proper gear: Sonos speakers, underfloor heating, a full kitchen, fast Wi-Fi, and even an EV charger nearby. Firewood is stocked. Dogs are welcome. You can walk straight from the door onto trails that wind through the forest and moorland. This isn’t a cabin in the woods, and it doesn’t try to be. It’s a conversion done with care—solid, generous, and tuned to the seasons.

The feel of the place is quiet but not precious. It works well for families, small groups, or just a few people looking for somewhere with a bit of thought behind it. It doesn’t demand your attention. But it’s the kind of place that’s still on your mind a week after leaving. Not flashy, just quietly satisfying.

Location

The Corner House sits within the Glen Dye estate in rural Aberdeenshire, just south of Banchory and west of Fettercairn. It’s reached by a single-track road that climbs gently into woodland and open moor. The setting feels remote, but it’s only about 45 minutes from Aberdeen by car. Positioned on the edge of the old farm steadings, the house is part of a small cluster of buildings, each with its own space and outlook. From here, trails lead directly into the hills, with the River Dye and surrounding forests forming a natural boundary to the wider estate.

What's nearby

Clachnaben is the nearest landmark—a granite tor visible from much of the estate and reachable on foot via marked trails. Further afield, you’ve got Fettercairn Distillery for a low-key whisky visit, and the coast at Stonehaven with its harbour and the ruins of Dunnottar Castle perched above the cliffs. Banchory is the closest town, about 20 minutes by car, with shops, cafés, and a small museum. The Cairn o’ Mount road offers scenic views across to Angus and the Mearns. It’s quiet country, but there’s enough variety nearby to keep walks, drives, and day trips interesting across a few days.
