Aberdeenshire

River North Esk

Add to List

Introduction

Stretching 47 kilometres from Scotland’s eastern coast, just north of Montrose, to the Water of Lee in the Cairngorms, River North Esk provides a boundary between Aberdeenshire and Angus along parts of its course. The river is well known for its salmon stock and as a spate river (it relies on rain to exist), September and October are usually the best months for fishing. North Esk has numerous tributaries along its path, including Water of Effock and the West Water, while you can relax in the company of the Rocks of Solitude – a local beauty spot where are series of waterfalls created as the river flows through a narrow gorge.
