North Lodge is a semi-detached Victorian house for six on the Glen Dye estate, south of Banchory, built in the late 1890s for the caretakers who looked after Glen Dye Lodge.

It was refurbished from top to bottom in 2018 and is full of colour, with old oil portraits above a blue velvet sofa, an open fire, a roll-top bath, and two king-size beds and two singles across three bedrooms.

The best of it is down a private path past the Summer House. There, on the bank of the River Dye, is the River Cabin, a little timber cabin with a wood-burning stove inside and a Big Green Egg in the floodlit woods outside, kept for North Lodge guests alone. There's a wood-fired hot tub as well, and dogs are welcome.

The river is on the doorstep.

The River Cabin is a short walk along a private footpath, and the owners suggest river dips, wild swimming and cooking on the Big Green Egg in the floodlit woods. There is a Clachnaben walk nearer the Steadings, The Bothy, The Sawmill and North Lodge that does not need driving to, and the estate’s pub, sauna and Adventure Trail for the evenings.

Where it is

North Lodge sits on the banks of the River Dye near the main house, and the River Cabin is reached from it by a private riverside footpath that winds past the Summer House.

Glen Dye is a private estate of around 15,000 acres at Bridge of Dye, on the B974 Cairn o’ Mount road near Strachan and Banchory. From the south, leave the A90 at Edzell for Fettercairn and take the B974 over the Cairn o’ Mount: the estate is just after the snow gates at the bottom of the hill. From Banchory, head south at the lights towards Strachan, turn left at the signpost to Fettercairn and follow the B974 for about ten minutes, to just before the snow gates. When the police close the snow gates in bad weather, the way in from the south is via Stonehaven. Aberdeen Airport is about 40 minutes away, Stonehaven or Aberdeen are the closest stations, and the exact address comes before your stay.
