No 4 Steading Cottage is a semi-detached stone house for seven at the Steadings on the Glen Dye estate, near Strachan in Aberdeenshire.

It was once a derelict Victorian barn, and it has been brought back to life in vivid colour. The large sitting room has a wood-burning stove under a gilt-framed portrait, and in the kitchen and dining room a whole wall of old portraits looks down on the table.

Four bedrooms sleep seven, from a pale wood four-poster against a hot pink wall to a twin room and a single under a roof window, with two bathrooms. Out the back is a private yard with a Big Green Egg, and fifty metres down a woodland path is your own Swedish wood-fired hot tub among the trees. Dogs are welcome, and for a bigger group it books together with No 5 next door for fourteen.

Where it is

No 4 is one of the Steadings, among the cluster of cottages at the centre of Glen Dye.

Glen Dye is a private estate of around 15,000 acres at Bridge of Dye, on the B974 Cairn o’ Mount road near Strachan and Banchory. From the south, leave the A90 at Edzell for Fettercairn and take the B974 over the Cairn o’ Mount: the estate is just after the snow gates at the bottom of the hill. From Banchory, head south at the lights towards Strachan, turn left at the signpost to Fettercairn and follow the B974 for about ten minutes, to just before the snow gates. When the police close the snow gates in bad weather, the way in from the south is via Stonehaven. Aberdeen Airport is about 40 minutes away, Stonehaven or Aberdeen are the closest stations, and the exact address comes before your stay. The estate office is at Bridge of Dye Steading, Strachan, AB31 6LT.
