In the new town of Chapelton, near Stonehaven, a white corner building with big windows holds a bright, sunny café called Brae.

It was set up by a brother and sister, Jodie and Dale Barbour, as a place for good coffee, good food and a relaxed welcome.

The house coffee comes from Figment, a speciality roaster in Aberdeen, smooth and full of flavour, and everything on the menu is made in-house, fresh and in small batches. Brunch is served from opening until half past eleven, lunch from noon until half past two, and the counter is full of pastries and bakes. There is a takeaway hatch for those on the move.

Families are made especially welcome, with a kids' corner, and it is just fifteen minutes' drive from Aberdeen.

Brunch runs from opening until 11.30am and lunch from noon to 2.30pm; check Brae's own site for the days it opens.

Everything can be taken away from the hatch.
