The Carron Fish Bar

The Stonehaven chip shop where, the story goes, the deep-fried Mars bar was first fried, in 1992.

Welcome

The Carron's claim to fame is the deep-fried Mars bar.

In 1992, when this was still called the Haven Chip Bar, two fifteen-year-olds from Mackie Academy up the road, John Davie and Brian McDonald, were in for their lunch and daring each other to try something disgusting. Evelyn Balgowan, behind the counter, battered a Mars bar and put it in the fryer.

The idea took a while to travel, until the Evening Express wrote about it in the summer of 1995. Then the papers took it round the world, and it has never really stopped. There is a plaque in the shop to the three of them.

The Carron still fries them, and visitors still come from all over to try one, often straight after a fish supper. The fish and chips are the other reason to come: eat them on the sea front a few steps away, with the gulls watching. Orders can be placed online.
