Catterline Bay

South of Aberdeen and neighbouring coastal town Stonehaven is the picturesque Catterline Bay. The curved, shingle beach is said to have been a landing point for St Ninian back in the 5th century, as he attempted to convert the Picts to Christianity. While an historic fishing village, Catterline also has a history of smuggling, as the fishermen looked for ways to supplement their meagre income. Today, the bay and its charms attract a number of artists from the local area and further afield, while each June, it hosts the annual Gala and Cartie Challenge.
