Located ten kilometres from the nearest town of Banchory, the remote Clune Wood hill rewards those willing to move off the beaten path. At its summit lies a recumbent (lain down) stone circle likely dating back to the Neolithic era. Scholars of the era believe that arrangements of this kind were used in prehistoric rituals that celebrated the cycles of the moon. Like with other recumbent circles, the Clune Wood stones form a frame of sorts that captures the lunar event known as a standstill moon – a phenomenon that occurs just once every eighteen years.
