Standing Stones in Scotland Worth Seeing

Standing stones and stone circles are scattered right across Scotland, most of them in a field with nothing between you and them but a gate. Most are free to visit, open at any hour, and thousands of years old. These are the ones worth finding.

Standing stones and stone circles are scattered right across Scotland, most of them in a field with nothing between you and them but a gate. They've been standing for four or five thousand years, nobody is entirely sure why, and there's something about walking up to one on your own at dusk that stays with you.

We've picked out our favourite stones and circles across the country, from famous rings to single stones in the middle of nowhere. Most of them are free and open at any hour, and many of them are quiet.
