Standing Stones of Stenness

You really can’t go to Orkney without visiting this site. Although it’s not completely clear why they were erected being able to stand beside them and wonder at what it must have been like 5000 years ago when they were erected. The tallest of these Neolithic stones stands some 19 ft high and it is thought that there may have been 12 stones in a circle surrounded by a ditch with a large hearth in the centre.
