The Foveran is a restaurant with rooms at St Ola, three miles from Kirkwall, and its long dining room looks out through big windows over the fields to historic Scapa Flow.

The cooking is built on Orkney produce, and after dinner there is a nightcap to be had from a range of local ales, gins, liqueurs and Highland malts.

There are eight comfortable ground-floor rooms, all en suite and reached from inside, each with a television, tea and coffee and free wifi, and the bathrooms are stocked with products from the British fragrance house Duck Island. In the morning comes a full cooked Orcadian breakfast, with free-range eggs, black pudding and sausages, looking out over Scapa Flow; the bread, bannocks and preserves are all made in the kitchen. There is plenty of parking, level access and accessible toilets, and menus for children and for gluten-free, nut-free, vegan and vegetarian diets. Rooms run from £89 to £155 a night.
