Standing Stones of Lundin
Three huge Bronze Age standing stones, about five metres tall, on a fairway of the ladies' golf course at Lundin Links in Fife.
On a fairway of the ladies' golf course at Lundin Links, golfers play their shots past something far older than the game: three enormous standing stones, rising some five metres from the neatly mown grass.
The stones were raised in the Bronze Age, around four thousand years ago, and they are among the most impressive prehistoric monuments in Scotland. There were once four of them, perhaps marking a ritual site, and old stone burial cists have been found nearby. Local tales say the Druids held their ceremonies here, but no one really knows who raised them, or why. Up close, the great weathered slabs of sandstone are split and forked at their tops.
Because they stand on a working course, visitors should ask at the starter's hut beside the first tee before walking out, and keep an eye out for golf balls.
