The Woodshed is a timber cabin for two at Westside, across the valley from Eastside, the family’s hill farm in the Pentland Hills near Penicuik.

It has a Scandinavian feel, was commended in the Saltire Society’s Housing Architectural Design Awards and has been featured in Dwell. Outside it's clad in silvered wood, and inside it's all pale timber. There's a double-height living space, a wood-burning stove fed with logs from the farm, and a bedroom up in the roof with a king-size bed. In the garden there's a wood-fired hot tub for Woodshed guests only, which you light and stoke yourself. It's quiet enough up here to hear the cuckoo and spot the wild hares, and Edinburgh is only about ten miles away. It sleeps two; babies who aren’t yet crawling are welcome, older children aren’t.

So close to Edinburgh, but far enough away to feel like a different world.

What is here

There’s a wood-burning stove with logs from the farm’s own timber, and a wood-fired hot tub filled with spring water for Woodshed guests only, with enough logs supplied to light it twice (more can be bought) and outdoor towels for getting to and from it.

Where it is

The Woodshed is at Westside, across the valley from the main Eastside cottages and about a ten-minute walk from them, on the Cowan family’s working hill farm in the Pentland Hills Regional Park, a mile up a farm track near Penicuik in Midlothian.

Penicuik, about four miles away, is the nearest town, central Edinburgh is about 25 minutes by car, and Edinburgh Airport is about 15 miles. The Houstons 101 bus stops at the end of the track, though some taxis won’t drive up it.
