The King's Theatre – Sushi in Tollcross and a Show

A few hours.

Directions

The route

The King's Theatre on Leven Street reopened in August 2026 after its redevelopment, with its red sandstone front, its Edwardian auditorium and three refurbished bars.

Start with sushi on Grindlay Street, then walk through Tollcross in time for a drink before curtain up. All of it is under a roof but the short walk between the two.

Before you go

  1. Book accommodation nearby

If you are staying over: here are ours nearest where the day starts and ends.

  2. Book King's Theatre

Book seats for the night's show on Capital Theatres' What's on page or on 0131 529 6000, Monday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm: the shows, curtain-up times and prices change through the year, and wheelchair spaces are booked by phone.

  3. Book supper at Kanpai

Book a table at Kanpai on its website or on 0131 228 1602 for about 5.30pm: dinner is served Tuesday to Saturday from 5pm, and it's shut on Sundays and Mondays, when Harajuku Kitchen on Gillespie Place serves dinner from 5pm.

The day

Tollcross

An early supper of sushi and sake, a short walk through Tollcross as the streetlights come on, and a drink in the bar before the show.

About four and a half hours

  1. Kanpai

    Kanpai

    Supper

Kanpai is a small sushi restaurant at 8 to 10 Grindlay Street, just off Lothian Road. Dinner starts at 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday, and a table at 5.30pm leaves time for sushi, tempura and a little sake before the show. Book on its website or on 0131 228 1602. If you come by car, park once for the evening: the theatre has no car park, and the nearest are the pay-and-display bays on the side streets of Tollcross; the signs give the charge. Kanpai is shut on Sundays and Mondays; on those nights Harajuku Kitchen on Gillespie Place, close to the theatre, serves dinner from 5pm.

  2. 9 min on foot

    An attraction

Walk 9 minutes down Lothian Road and through Tollcross to the King's Theatre on Leven Street. What's on changes through the year, so pick the night's show on Capital Theatres' What's on page, which lists the King's dates, curtain-up times and prices, and book there or on 0131 529 6000, Monday to Saturday from 11am to 3pm. The three refurbished bars open about an hour before the performance and again at the interval; ask for a reusable cup to take a drink in to your seat. The theatre is step-free from street to seat through the level side entrance by the café, with two lifts to every level and a Changing Places toilet. Only assistance dogs are allowed in.

If it rains

All of it is under a roof but the 9-minute walk from Grindlay Street to Leven Street.
