1925 at The Pompadour
The restaurant of the chef Dean Banks in the Pompadour, an A-listed dining room of 1925 in the Caledonian hotel at the West End of Princes Street, with views to the castle.
There are few dining rooms in Scotland as grand as the Pompadour, and an evening here feels like an occasion from the moment you sit down.
It's in the Caledonian hotel at the West End of Princes Street, a room that first opened as a restaurant in 1925 and is named after Madame de Pompadour, the favourite of Louis XV. The A-listed interior has hand-painted walls, an ornate plaster ceiling and great arched windows, and from some of the tables you look up to Edinburgh Castle. Today it's the restaurant of the chef Dean Banks, cooking modern Scottish food from local, seasonal produce with a French accent, from an à la carte menu at dinner and a menu of its own at lunch. It's in the Michelin Guide, and there's no dress code. Dinner is served from Wednesday to Sunday and lunch from Friday to Sunday, so book ahead through its own site and ask for a window table.
