On Lady Lawson Street, below the castle, a dark stone warehouse with a great red door is Timberyard, one of the city's most admired restaurants.

It is family-run, and it has held a Michelin star since 2023, with a Green Star added in 2026 for the care it takes over where its food comes from.

The cooking draws on Scotland's larder through the seasons, and the menus change every week: a set lunch and a longer tasting menu, with vegetarian and vegan menus too. The dining room is long and open, with timber floors, bare walls and tall windows.

Timberyard serves dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, and lunch from Friday to Sunday. There is no a la carte and no children's menu, and tables are best booked well ahead.
