There's something cheering about a café where the cakes are the main event, and Lovecrumbs on the West Port, just up from the Grassmarket, has been that place since 2012.

It's best known for its tall layer cakes, alongside cinnamon buns, brownies and focaccia, all made each morning by its own bakers at Company Bakery in Musselburgh. The coffee is roasted by Papercup in Glasgow, the milk is organic from a farm in Ayrshire, and there are vegan treats and a vegan grilled cheese too. It's a relaxed, friendly room, with shelves of lovely things from independent makers and designers to take home. They don't take bookings, but the wait for a table is rarely more than ten minutes, and weekends are laptop free. Dogs on a lead are very welcome. If you need a whole cake for a celebration, you can order one for collection, five days ahead.
