The Wash House is an 18th-century stone building at Eastside, the Cowan family's hill farm in the Pentland Hills near Penicuik, made by the architects Studio IMA into a small, beautifully crafted hideaway for two.

Behind the old walls it's bright and white, with screens of pale ash slats, a black breakfast bar with stools and a wood-burning stove. A big window has an ash seat in front of it. The bed sits a few steps up behind the slats, and the shower room is lined in pale marble, with a rainfall shower and brass fittings. In the woods is the farm’s sauna, a steam-sauna yurt shared by four cottages, which you can book for a private session. It's a mile up a farm track into a quiet glen, with Edinburgh about ten miles away.

So close to Edinburgh, but far enough away to feel like a different world.

Where it is

Eastside is in the Pentland Hills Regional Park near Penicuik, in Midlothian, at the end of a farm track about a mile from the main road.

Penicuik, about four miles away, is the nearest town, central Edinburgh is a 10-mile drive away (Waverley Station is 13 miles) and Edinburgh Airport is 15 miles. A car is the easy way here; without one, take the Houstons 101 bus to the Eastside Farm stop at the end of the track and walk the last mile up it.

Getting hereEastside is a mile up a farm track in the Pentland Hills, 4 miles from Penicuik and 13 from central Edinburgh. The Woodshed is across the valley at Westside, a ten-minute walk over the fields. The owners recommend a car: some taxis will not drive the track, and the 101 bus stops at the track's end.
