On the western edge of Edinburgh, a deep old quarry at Ratho has been filled with water and turned into a surf beach.

Lost Shore is Europe's largest wave pool, and it sends out clean, rolling waves one after another, with no need to wait for the weather or the tide.

The waves come from Wavegarden technology, and they can be tuned from gentle white water for first-timers to steep, fast walls for experienced surfers, so sessions and lessons are matched to every level. There is adaptive surfing, camps for children and an after-school club. Around the pool the resort has pods and lodges to stay in by the water or up on the hill, and three kitchens serving food under the Lost Food name.

Everything is booked ahead online. Lost Shore is about twenty-five minutes from the city centre, and next door, in another old quarry, is the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena.

Lessons and surf sessions are booked ahead online, for first-timers through to experienced surfers, with adaptive surfing, kids' camps and an after-school club.
