In the village of Ratho, just west of Edinburgh, the Bridge Inn stands right on the bank of the Union Canal beside an old stone bridge.

It is a handsome old building with a lovely atmosphere, and from its terrace you can watch the narrowboats glide past.

It is a pub, a restaurant and a small hotel. The kitchen cooks with Scottish fish and meat, from Borders beef to lobster landed on the east coast, with menus that follow the seasons, and there are good gluten-free choices, fish and chips among them. Breakfast is served from early in the morning.

Upstairs there are four airy rooms, which make a peaceful base for exploring the canal and the countryside west of the city. There is a pub quiz and live music most weeks, and it makes a good stop on a walk or cycle along the canal towpath.
