On Dalry Road, a few minutes' walk from Haymarket station, a dark shopfront with COFFEE above the door and a name lettered boldly on the glass is Throat Punch.

The name is a promise: this is a roaster that likes its coffee strong, and it says so without apology.

The coffee is roasted by the company and poured in the cafe, from bold coffees with a kick of robusta to gentler single origins for anyone who wants a softer start, with beans to take home. The room is small and friendly, furnished with retro chairs and tables. Two shop dogs keep an eye on things, and other dogs are welcome.

Throat Punch opens every day in the morning and early afternoon, a good first stop before a train from Haymarket.
