Fern Forest House

Add to List

Introduction

Fern Forest House was built as the home of Dunskey's head gardener, and the position still shows why the job came with it: the house sits between the estate's two lochs, close to the walled garden, with the kitchen window looking towards the hedge maze and the old stables courtyard. The planting around it works through the calendar, snowdrops and bluebells giving way to rhododendrons in early summer, then the big hydrangeas that colour the autumn.

Inside, it's the estate's family house. Three bedrooms, each with its own en-suite plus a half bath downstairs, a living room with a bay window, an open fire and a hand-painted forest mural of foxes and wild birds, and a proper dining room off the kitchen. Recent additions lean into the family brief: swing sets in the wildflower garden, a games room in the converted shed, and a fire pit and BBQ area facing the fields, where deer, pheasants and the estate's cattle wander through the view.

Facilities & Services

The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas cooker, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher, coffee machine and washing machine, plus a starter pack of dish soap, sponges, kitchen roll and laundry detergent. There's a smart TV and WiFi, a games room in the garden shed, swing sets, outdoor furniture, a fire pit and a BBQ with tools. Logs are unlimited for the open fire. Every booking includes a welcome hamper of bread, eggs, coffee, artisan cheese, jam and baked goods, plus laundry, linen, Dunskey toiletries, complimentary use of the estate boat and chef-made ready meals to order.

Location

The house sits at the heart of Dunskey Estate between its two lochs, on 2,000 acres of coastal Galloway running from Portpatrick towards Killantringan Lighthouse. The maze and walled garden are a short walk, the nearest beach and the village are each about a mile, and the glen path leads past a waterfall to the estate's two private bays. Stranraer, eight miles east, has the supermarkets and the railway station, the Cairnryan ferries are 20 minutes away, and Glasgow is roughly two hours by car.

Good to know

Fern Forest House sleeps a maximum of six across two king rooms and a twin, with three en-suites and an additional half bathroom. Minimum stays run to three nights year round, rising to seven over Christmas and New Year, with flexible check-in dates. Up to two pets are welcome, with a £60 deep-clean fee per stay. The house can be booked alongside other lodges for larger gatherings of up to 30 across the estate. Grounds are closed to the public, wellies are the estate's own advice, and a car is near enough required.

What's nearby

Portpatrick is a mile off, a pastel-fronted harbour village with pubs, restaurants, a brewery, a putting green and a public tennis court, plus the start of the 212-mile Southern Upland Way climbing the cliffs towards Killantringan Lighthouse, built in 1900 by David A Stevenson. The ruin of the original Dunskey Castle, a 1500s tower house, stands south of the village. Dunskey Golf Course is beside the harbour, Logan Botanic Garden is 20 minutes down the Rhins, and the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's southernmost point, is about an hour's drive.
