Stranraer – A Museum Trail, Lunch and a Day in the Park
A day.
The route
Here's a family day in Stranraer that you can do on foot once the car is parked.
The town museum is free and has trails for children to follow round its cases, and lunch is at Fig and Olive along the street. The afternoon is at Agnew Park on the shore of Loch Ryan, with a playground, a boating lake and, in the school holidays, a mini railway, boats and go-karts.

The day
Stranraer
A morning hunting through the old town hall's cases with a children's trail, and lunch a few doors along. Then it's down to the seafront park for the play ship, the lake and, in the holidays, a ride on the little railway.
About five hours

Stranraer Museum
An attraction
Stranraer Museum fills the white Old Town Hall with the clock tower on George Street, right in the middle of the town. Leave the car in one of the town-centre car parks, where the signs show how long you can park, as the rest of the day is a short walk. The museum is free and opens Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 12.30pm and 1pm to 4pm. Its displays have been refurbished, with new audiovisual screens and trails for children to follow round the cases. The ground floor is level and the first floor is closed. Ring 01776 705088 to ask about toilets and baby changing.

Fig and Olive
Lunch
Lunch is a couple of minutes' walk west along George Street at Fig and Olive, a pale blue café, kitchen and little shop under a fingerpost pointing back to the museum. It usually opens Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm, Saturday 9.30am to 4pm and Sunday 10.30am to 3pm, and shuts on Mondays; it posts no hours of its own online, so ring 01776 700099 before you go. If it's full, the Cosmic Café at the Ryan Centre, a few minutes' drive south, is open every day from 10.30am.
About 6 min on foot

Agnew Park
Agnew Park is about six minutes' walk further, on the shore of Loch Ryan at the west end of the seafront, with its entrance and wheelchair-accessible parking on Agnew Crescent. It's open all year and free to wander. It has a playground with a wooden ship in the sand, a boating lake with a little island of palms, and a café. In the school holidays, from noon to 5pm, the extras come out: a mini railway at £1.70 a child and £2.20 an adult, mini cars, boats on the lake at £6.50 for 15 minutes and go-karts at £3.80 for 15 minutes, at the time of writing. Dumfries and Galloway's autumn holiday runs from Monday 12 to Friday 23 October 2026; outside the holidays it's the playground and the lake.
If it rains
The museum and lunch are indoors; the park is all out in the weather, so on a wet afternoon swap it for the pool and soft play at the Ryan Centre, a few minutes' drive south.
