Symphonica Lodge
Introduction
Symphonica began as the dairy house supplying Dunskey Castle, built at the turn of the century when the estate fed itself, and its conversion carries the estate's best artistic detail: murals of Dunskey's four seasons painted by the Scottish landscape artist Victoria Orr Ewing, running through the lodge. The name fits, one property, four movements.
Everything is on one level, which makes it the easiest Dunskey lodge for anyone who'd rather skip stairs. The open living space holds the kitchen, dining area and a wood-burner in the corner, with big windows to the garden and woodland. One bedroom has a cream Gustavian wicker bed and en-suite, the other two Italianate canopy beds under an Art Deco glass chandelier, its en-suite behind sliding barn doors. The terrace outside is among the sunniest spots on the estate, with a BBQ, an outdoor bath plumbed to the hot water system, and a hidden door leading straight into the walled garden.

Facilities & Services
The kitchen is fully stocked and equipped, with a starter pack of dish soap, sponges, kitchen roll and laundry detergent. There's a washing machine, smart TV and WiFi, underfloor heating, rain showers in both en-suites, outdoor furniture on the terrace, a BBQ with tools and the outdoor bathtub connected to the hot water supply. Logs are unlimited for the wood-burner. Every booking includes a welcome hamper of bread, eggs, coffee, artisan cheese, jam and baked goods, plus laundry, linen, Dunskey's own toiletries, complimentary use of the boat on the estate loch and chef-made ready meals to order.
Location
The lodge sits beside the walled garden at the heart of Dunskey Estate, steps from the hedge maze, on 2,000 acres of coastal Galloway between Portpatrick and Killantringan Lighthouse. The garden's Victorian glasshouse is through the door in the wall, the glen path leads past a waterfall to the estate's two private bays, and Portpatrick village is a few minutes' drive. Stranraer, eight miles east, covers supermarkets and the railway, the Cairnryan ferries to Northern Ireland run 20 minutes away, and Glasgow is around two hours by car.
Good to know
Symphonica sleeps a maximum of four across two en-suite bedrooms, one with a double and one with two singles, all on a single level with no internal stairs. Minimum stays run to three nights year round, rising to seven over Christmas and New Year, with flexible check-in dates. Up to two pets are welcome, with a £60 deep-clean fee per stay. The estate grounds, maze, walled garden, lochs and beaches are closed to the public, shared only with other lodge guests. A car is the sensible way to arrive; the bus from Stranraer runs once a day.
What's nearby
Portpatrick has the pubs, the brewery, the putting green and the start of the 212-mile Southern Upland Way, which climbs the cliffs north towards Killantringan Lighthouse, built in 1900 by David A Stevenson. The ruin of the original Dunskey Castle, a 1500s tower house, stands on the coast south of the village, viewable from the path. Dunskey Golf Course sits beside the harbour, Logan Botanic Garden grows its subtropical collection 20 minutes down the Rhins, and the Mull of Galloway, Scotland's southernmost point, is about an hour's drive.
