Scotland runs out here. The Mull is the last of the Rhins, a headland so narrow that the sea is on both sides of the road for the final mile, and it ends in cliffs that drop eighty metres into a tide race. On a clear day you can see Ireland, the Isle of Man, Cumbria and the hills of Kintyre from the same spot, which is not a claim many places in Britain can make. The RSPB has the reserve at the end: guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and fulmars on the cliff faces from spring into summer, and gannets passing offshore. The lighthouse stands on the point. It is a long way down a dead-end road.
