Inverenzie Cottage is an old stone farmhouse for four in Glengairn, near Ballater in Aberdeenshire, with nothing around it but fields, dry stone walls and the hills.

Many families lived here over the years before it was completely renovated in 2016, and the owners kept the inside as simple as they could so the view comes first. It still feels warm. There’s an old stone fireplace in the sitting room and a round table in the kitchen under the skylights, and upstairs the bath was placed to look out at the hills.

There are two bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, and a private garden with a terrace and a barbecue. Ballater is ten to fifteen minutes away by car for shops and cafés, and one small or medium dog is welcome. The cottage closes from December to February, and the last stretch in is an unpaved track, so bring a car with good ground clearance.

No restaurant: the fridge can be stocked before you come, and the Co-op, deli and butcher are in Ballater.

Book them through the owners a week ahead; two for anything tailored.

Where it is

Inverenzie stands on its own in Glengairn, near Ballater in Aberdeenshire, with views over the rolling hills.

Ballater is the nearest village, ten to fifteen minutes away by car for shops, cafés and places to eat, and Balmoral Castle is about fifteen minutes away. Laggan Cottage is its neighbour. There is parking at the cottage for about three cars, and the nearest EV chargers are in Ballater and Braemar.
