Linn of Quoich - The Punchbowl
Introduction
The Linn of Quoich ravine plays home to a remarkable natural feature in the form of a large, bowl-shaped cavity next to a narrow waterfall. The Quoich itself is a tributary of the Dee, and the Punchbowl can be incorporated into a rewarding river walk (not to be undertaken in spate).
The rugged beauty of the Highlands is displayed in full bloom throughout the three-mile walk dubbed the Linn of Quoich. Following the constantly eroding riverbank, the entire journey is a challenge even for experienced walkers – however, the initial leg of the walk is gentler without missing too much of the gorgeous scenery. One particular spot to look out for is the unusual curved hole that has been nicknamed The Punchbowl. Apocrypha says the Earls of the nearby lands would place a ceremonial punchbowl atop the hole and drink from it after successful hunting expeditions. Whether that tale is fact or fiction, the natural splendour of Quoich is undeniable.
