Ballater

Ballater Golf Club – Heathland Golf in a Ring of Deeside Hills

A day.

The route

Golf has been played beside the Dee at Ballater since 1892, on a heathland course with a ring of hills all round and Lochnagar off to the west.

In 1906 James Braid and Harry Vardon played a match here, to celebrate a new pavilion and the course's extension.

    An attraction

Ballater Golf Club is on Victoria Road, where the club has a car park. Call in at the pro shop before you tee off; it hires out clubs, buggies and trolleys. The course is mostly heathland, rolling over old river terraces, with parkland away from the Dee. It plays to par 70 over 6,102 yards from the white tees. The club rates the first six holes the hardest, with two testing par 3s among them. The 7th, Lang Stracht, is the one hole over 500 yards. Visitors have their own changing room with free lockers and showers, and golf shoes stay outside the clubhouse. Afterwards the Coyles Restaurant looks across the 18th green to the Coyles of Muick. From November to March it serves a shorter menu on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and the bar opens at 11am every day.
