Ballater Golf Course
Introduction
Tucked between the River Dee and the Cairngorm hills, Ballater’s 18-hole course combines natural beauty with thoughtful design. Just minutes from the village centre, it offers scenic fairways, a welcoming clubhouse and easy access to Royal Deeside’s highlights, including Balmoral Castle and Lochnagar.
Introduction
Set against the backdrop of the Cairngorms and bordered by a gentle loop of the River Dee, Ballater is one of Scotland’s most scenic inland golf courses. It’s located just a short walk from the centre of the village, where stone cottages and well-kept shopfronts nod to Ballater’s Victorian past. The course was originally laid out in 1892 and extended to a full 18 holes in 1905. An exhibition match between Harry Vardon and James Braid marked its official opening, a sign of the calibre it has attracted ever since.
The layout measures around 6,100 yards and plays as a par 70. Expect soft undulations, tight approaches and a few riverbank holes that require a steady hand. The setting is a highlight in its own right. Tree-lined fairways open up to wide Highland views, with Lochnagar often visible on the skyline. Several holes follow the river’s edge, especially on the front nine, while the back nine rises gently into more open terrain.
Facilities include a well-stocked pro shop, seasonal restaurant and four EV charging points. Visitors can book online or by calling ahead, and there are discounted twilight rates during the summer months. Ballater also plays a key role in the Royal Deeside Golf Week, a four-course festival that includes Braemar, Aboyne and Banchory.
After your round, grab a table on the clubhouse terrace and watch the final groups come up the 18th. On a calm evening, the river barely makes a sound and the hills beyond the Dee turn gold as the sun drops.
