Inside the Fife Arms in Braemar is a room of red velvet, dark wood and amber lamplight lined from floor to ceiling with bottles.

This is Bertie's, a whisky library named after Queen Victoria's eldest son, the future King Edward VII, a famous lover of good living who was known to his family as Bertie.

More than 500 whiskies stand on its shelves, arranged like books by their flavour, fragrant, fruity, rich or smoky, so that you can wander among them and browse. The hotel's whisky experts are on hand to guide you, or you can simply sink into a chair by the fire with a dram.

Every day there are tastings, a flight of four drams from old favourites to new discoveries, led by one of the experts. The bar opens each evening at seven and runs late, and it is best to book a table.
