Innes House is a 17th-century tower house near Elgin in Moray, let whole for up to 38 people at the centre of a 5,000-acre estate.

It is Category A listed and was built between 1640 and 1653 for Sir Robert Innes, to a design by William Ayton. The Tennant family bought it in 1913, and Edward and Zoë Tennant, the fifth generation, look after it today. There are 20 bedrooms, 16 of them en suite, some with four-poster beds. The Drawing Room, the Old Library, the Whisky Room and the Billiards Room all have open fires, and there is a full-size grand piano. Dinner can be served in the Red Private Dining Room or the East Ballroom, with private chefs if you’d like them. Stay self-catered instead and there’s a country kitchen with an AGA. Outside are walled gardens, croquet and giant games on the lawn, and estate tracks that lead two miles to the beaches at Lossiemouth.

Where it is

Innes House stands at the centre of its 5,000-acre estate, a few miles from Elgin in Moray, which has shops, places to eat and its cathedral.

Lossiemouth and its beaches are six miles away, or a two-mile walk along the estate's private tracks. Inverness is about 50 minutes' drive and Aberdeen Airport 1 hour 20 minutes.
