Light until 18:10
A dram tastes better where it's made. Scotland's distilleries are some of the most rewarding places to visit in the country, from small farm distilleries with a handful of stills to famous names by the sea, and a tour where you can smell the malt, see the copper stills and taste straight from the cask is a day you'll remember long after the bottle's finished.
These days bring two or three distilleries together with good food and something to see between them, so there's more to the day than whisky. Each one is worked out stop by stop, with the drive between each place, where to eat, and which tours need booking ahead, since the most popular ones fill up weeks in advance in summer. Choose where you're starting from, or a day that catches your eye. Slàinte.

Not every day out needs to be a big one. A castle and a café, a walk and lunch, a museum when it rains: one place, somewhere good to eat close by, and the time between worked out.
