Breakfast at Figment – Coffee and Johnston Gardens

A few hours.

The route

Figment roasts its own coffee in the same building as its café on Countesswells Road, and its breakfasts, from smashed avocado on sourdough to a spicy breakfast bun, are worth crossing the city for.

A few minutes' walk away, Johnston Gardens is a small, peaceful city garden of streams, ponds, Japanese maples and little bridges. Together they make an easy couple of hours.

A slow morning in the west end: breakfast and a good coffee first, then half an hour in a quiet little garden round the corner.

    Figment

    Breakfast

Park by Johnston Gardens on Viewfield Road, and it's 7 minutes' walk round to Figment at 70 Countesswells Road. Its coffee is roasted in the same building, and there are fresh bakes, smashed avocado with scrambled eggs on sourdough, and The Sriracha, its own breakfast bun, with vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices too. It opens at 9am from Wednesday to Sunday and at 10am on Tuesday, and it's shut on Mondays. It doesn't take bookings in the daytime, so come early at the weekend.

    An attraction

Walk the 7 minutes back to the gardens, given to the city in 1936, where paths wind beside streams and ponds under tall beeches and rhododendrons. In the middle is a Japanese garden of bamboos and maples round a pond and an arched bridge, and the maples turn fiery red in autumn. Half an hour is plenty.

If it rains

In rain, linger over breakfast at Figment and take only a short turn round the gardens' paths; the maples are lovely wet.
