Fisher & Donaldson – a Fudge Doughnut and Desperate Dan

A few hours, from Dundee station and back.

The route

Fisher & Donaldson has been baking in Fife since 1919, and its café on Whitehall Street in Dundee serves a pot of tea with the bakery's much-loved fudge doughnut.

Round the corner on the High Street, Desperate Dan strides along with his dog, in the city where his comic was made.

The day

Dundee

A sweet start to the morning in the middle of Dundee: tea and something from the bakery counter, then a hello to two of the city's best-loved comic characters.

About an hour

  1. Fisher & Donaldson

    Breakfast

It's a 4-minute walk up from the station to Fisher & Donaldson at 12 Whitehall Street, a family bakery from Cupar with a takeaway counter and a traditional café tearoom. Order a pot of tea and a fudge doughnut, which a Courier review of the café called legendary, or stay on for a plate of stovies. The café is open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm, and shut on Sundays.

  2. 2 min on foot

    An attraction

From Fisher & Donaldson it's a 2-minute walk round the corner to the High Street. There the bronze Desperate Dan, the Dandy's cowboy, strides along with his dog Dawg on a lead, and Minnie the Minx takes aim at him with her catapult. They've stood here since 2001, in the city where DC Thomson still makes the Beano. The High Street is paved and level for a pushchair, and the station is a 6-minute walk back down.

If it rains

Tea at Fisher & Donaldson is indoors, and the statues are only a 2-minute walk away, so a wet day just means a quicker hello to Dan.
