Edinburgh is one of the best places in Scotland to base yourself for days out. The city could fill a week on its own, from the castle and the Old Town to the galleries and the walk up Arthur's Seat, but within an hour in any direction there's a whole other Scotland waiting. Head east and you're on the golden beaches of East Lothian and the clifftop ruin of Tantallon; cross the Forth and the fishing villages of Fife are close at hand; to the south lie the abbeys and rolling hills of the Borders.
Every day here is worked out stop by stop, with the drive or the train between each place, where to stop for lunch, and what to book before you go. Plenty can be done without a car, too, since trains and buses run to many of the best places from the city centre. Choose a day that suits the weather and your mood, and let us handle the rest.
