Elgin sits between the Moray coast and Speyside, which makes it a brilliant base for days out. The ruins of its great cathedral are in the town itself, the distilleries of Speyside are a short drive south, and the coast to the north has sandy beaches, cliffs, dolphins and pretty harbour villages like Findhorn and Burghead.
Each day is worked out stop by stop, with the drive between each place, where to eat, and the distillery tours that need booking ahead. Some are for whisky lovers; others are all about the coast and a long lunch by the sea. Choose your day, and if it's a whisky day, bring a driver.
