Alford – A Picnic at Haughton Country Park

A few hours.

The route

Haughton Country Park is on the edge of Alford beside the River Don, with wooden picnic tables, two play areas and a wide stretch of mown grass.

It's a simple family outing in the Howe of Alford. Pick up the food in the village, eat at the tables, then wander down to the wildflower meadow and the river.

About two hours

  1. Haughton Country Park

    Haughton Country Park

Haughton Country Park is on the edge of Alford, off Montgarrie Road, with room for about 300 cars. There's no set charge to park, and the council asks for a donation at the machines instead. The wooden picnic tables stand together in one area, with concrete slabs beside them for anyone who brings a barbecue. Children have two play areas, and there's mown grass all round for a ball game. After lunch, walk down to the River Don. The riverside has a wildflower meadow and a Trim Track of nine activity points for older children and adults, and paths lead on through the birch wood. One of the two toilet blocks stays open all year. The park is open in daylight, every day.

If it rains

The tables, the play areas and the riverside are all out in the open: in steady rain, keep the picnic for a drier day.
