Lerwick is Shetland's capital and a lively starting point for days out across the islands. Its old lanes and harbour are full of character, and the Shetland Museum tells the islands' story beautifully. From here, roads and ferries lead to Iron Age brochs, sandy beaches, cliffs full of seabirds, and the northern isles of Yell and Unst.
Every day is worked out stop by stop, with the drive or the ferry between each place, where to eat, and what to book before you go. Many were written by Laurie Goodlad, who lives here and knows the islands inside out, so you're in good hands. Choose a day, keep an eye on the ferry times, and enjoy the light.
