Clickimin and Mareel – Flumes, Lunch and a Film

A day.

Directions

The route

Lerwick's big leisure centre has a pool built for a wet day with children, with two flumes, a river ride, a bubble pool and a shallow toddlers' pool with its own slide.

After the splashing, Mareel on the waterfront serves lunch in its café bar and shows films on its cinema screens, so the afternoon ends at the pictures. It suits families with children of any age.

Before you go

  1. Book Film tickets at Mareel

Book the film at Mareel on Shetland Arts' website before you go, for a showing that starts after lunch; Mareel is shut on Mondays.

The day

Lerwick

A day of flumes and geysers, a sandwich looking over the dock, then a film in the dark.

About six hours

  1. Clickimin Leisure Complex

    Clickimin Leisure Complex

The Clickimin Leisure Complex is on Lochside, on the west side of Lerwick, open Monday to Friday 7am to 10pm and at weekends 9am to 8pm. Beside its 25-metre main pool are the Leisure Waters: a river ride with geysers, airbeds and water cannon, a giant bubble pool, an outdoor lagoon with a waterfall and two flumes. For the smallest there's a toddlers' pool, 15 to 45 centimetres deep, with an Under the Sea slide, a squirt station and finger jets. The Leisure Waters and the flumes are open at set times, so check the pool timetable on Shetland Recreational Trust's website before you go. The changing village has family cubicles, and there's a disabled changing room with a tracking hoist. Its café, Food Culture Lerwick, is open from 9am on weekdays and 10am at weekends.

    Lunch

It's 4 minutes' drive round to Mareel on Hay's Dock, which has its own parking. Its café bar serves locally made sandwiches, wraps and salads, with cakes and hot drinks, and from the windows you can watch the seabirds and seals in the dock. It opens Tuesday to Thursday and Sunday 10am to 8pm, and Friday and Saturday until midnight; it's shut on Mondays and sometimes closes for private events. After lunch, see a film in one of its cinema screens: the listings are on Shetland Arts' website, with family films often in the programme. If the café is shut, eat at Food Culture Lerwick before leaving Clickimin.

If it rains

All of it is under a roof, apart from the outdoor lagoon: only the short drive between is out in the weather.
