Ayr at Sunset – the Esplanade, Arran and Supper at the Fox
A few hours.
The route
Ayr's seafront looks straight out across the Firth of Clyde to the hills of Arran, and on a clear evening the sun goes down over the water while the town lights come on behind you.
A walk along the Esplanade from the Low Green is all it takes. Supper is a few minutes away at the Fox & Willow, a gastropub in a big ivy-covered house in the south of the town.

The day
Ayr
A walk by the sea as the sun goes down over the firth, then a warm supper in one of Ayr's best-loved dining rooms.
About two and a half hoursAbout 1.5 miles on foot
Ayr's Esplanade and the Low Green
The Low Green is the big open green behind Ayr's beach, and the Esplanade runs along the sand in front of it. Park along the seafront by the Low Green, where the signs show the charges and how long you can stay. Walk south along the Esplanade with the sea on your right. Across the Firth of Clyde the hills of Arran fill the skyline, and on a clear evening the sun sinks over the water. From October to March the sun sets between about a quarter to four and ten to eight, in good time for supper. In the long days from April to September it sets late, so have supper first and walk after. Wrap up: the seafront catches the wind.

The Fox & Willow
Supper
Supper is 4 minutes' drive inland at the Fox & Willow, 46 Carrick Road, a gastropub in a big ivy-covered house with palm trees out front. Each room has its own character, from the bar hung with greenery to the peacock lounge and a teal dining room lined with portraits of animals in tweed. The evening menu is served from 4.30pm, with Sunday's à la carte from noon to 9pm and a taco night on Fridays. There's a children's menu. Dogs are welcome in the bar, the garden domes and the garden, but not the restaurant. Book a table on its website or on 01292 262846.
If it rains
In rain, skip the seafront and go straight to the Fox & Willow: supper is indoors.
